Photoshop CC tutorial showing how to apply the cinematic effect to your photographs. The cinematic effect that we're going for is the teal-orange look, which is a typical movie effect in action movies.

This effect gives the dark shades of your image a cool teal tone, while the light shades take a warm orange look. This makes the actor stand out since the colors are complementary and creates a "pop"when put side by side.

It is a good idea to do a color correction on your image, so you that it has neutral grays and no color cast.

Magic Wand

First, the subject needs to be cut out from the background. A great tool for this is the Magic Wand tool! Start selecting, and hold Shift to add to that selection when needed. A helpful aspect of this tool is that you can change the tolerance; if you’re selecting too much, lower the tolerance.

The hair is a little trickier than the rest of the body, and we must refine the edge of the selection. Go to Select - Refine Edge. Choose the best view to help you out; in this case, we use the overlay view. Click on the refine edge tool, and paint over the edges of the hair. Doing this will momentarily “erase” the mask from those edges, but will then select only what is similar to the remaining mask. In other words, it should perfectly select out only the hair.

We are going to use this selection to create a layer mask, and we want that mask to apply to all of our future layers. So, put the layer into a group, and put the layer mask onto that group rather than the layer itself. Now, any layers you add to the group will have the same mask applied to them, and you won’t have to worry about creating a new mask of your subject over and over.
Step and Repeat

To see how this process works, start by creating any shape and filling it with black. Next, turn it into a selection (hold Cmd and click on the layer).

Step: Opt + Cmd + T to select the pattern. Move it to where you’d like and click enter.

Repeat: Hold Shift + Opt + Cmd + T. This will repeat the duplication that you just completed.

Custom Patterns

Dark patterns on a light background are best for making custom patterns. Go to Edit - Define Pattern. Name it and click OK. Nothing will happen until you go back to the image of your subject and apply it there. Create a new fill layer and select Use: pattern. Select your new pattern in the custom pattern drop down. You can choose different options in the scripted pattern section as well.

Helpful hints:

Photographing your subject on a solid colored background is key for this!
To turn any layer into a selection, just hold Ctrl/Cmd and click on the thumbnail of the layer.
Multiply is a great blend mode if you want your pattern to show up but include shadows as well.

Photoshop CC tutorial showing how to give photos a trendy, gritty, high-contrast, and desaturated look.

You've probably seen a similar grungy effect in movie posters and advertisements. Nike has used it a lot lately, or at least something similar.

This effect is actually quite simple; all we'll use is two adjustment layers, and one filter. One of those adjustment layers is the "Color Lookup" adjustment layer which is new in Photoshop CS6.

If you have CS5 or older don't worry about it, I'll be showing you an alternative technique, that should give you very similar results.

In this video, Mahalo expert Sean Hewitt explains how to use the Image Composite Editor to combine multiple images into one single image in the Windows Live Photo Gallery.

How to Use the Image Composite Editor
---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Navigate to the Start Menu and open Windows Live Photo Gallery.

2. Navigate to the top menu bar and click Create. A tool bar will appear at the top with various icons corresponding to the Create option. Click More tools and navigate in the drop down menu to Download more photo tools.

4. A window will pop up called Windows Live Photo Gallery Plug-ins. From this list, click the middle option called Image Composite Editor.

5. This will bring up the Image Composite Editor plug-in. Click Download now to acquire the plug-in.

6. Now, go back to your photo gallery and click on the photos you would like to composite. Select all of the ones you would like to choose. With all of them selected, click More tools and navigate down to Create Image Composite. 

7. This will now create a single image out of all the images you have selected. You can now control options such as Quality, Cropping and Saving.

8. To save, click on Export to Disk. A dialogue box will pop up allowing you to specify where on your computer you would like to save this composited image.
